Culture and Food in Toronto

No matter which city we explore, we’re always eager to learn about the local cuisine. Everyone loves to eat, and discovering fantastic restaurants is definitely high on my list and probably yours, too. One of the things I adore about Toronto is the incredible breadth of cultures you can experience, whether at festivals, street events, community centers, or restaurants. I’m especially fond of West Indian cuisine and would happily dig into a roti any day. I first visited a Trinidadian restaurant called Island Foods back in 2000, and it’s been consistently impressive ever since.

In the photo, you can see a curry-spiced goat stew with potatoes, all wrapped up in a delicious roti (an Indian-style flatbread). Every bite made me crave more, even after I felt completely full. Although I waited about 25 minutes to order, it was absolutely worth it. The line itself reflected Toronto’s diversity; you really haven’t experienced the city’s multicultural vibe until you’ve seen its people. In that queue, there were folks of every age and background Latino, Indian, West Indian, White, Korean, African, Middle Eastern, and many more all waiting for some superb West Indian fare. It was incredible to witness!

As for the ambiance, I must admit I’m surprised there hasn’t been a renovation in two decades. The atmosphere is very relaxed and clearly geared toward takeout rather than hosting any big gatherings.

I’d easily give the food five stars. If you’ve never tried roti before, make sure to swing by this place when you’re in Toronto. They also have options for vegetarians.

What about you have you enjoyed anything amazing in Toronto? I’d love to hear your recommendations. Feel free to share!
